Bengali Vegetable chops

These are also called bhejetebil chops. I had just pulled out fresh beets from my backyard and wanted to make something healthy yet tasty with it.


A very very flavorful recipe and of course packed with nutrition with lot of beet and carrot.

It does take some time to boil the veggies, mash, mix in spices, and turning into balls. But worth the effort.


Spice mix

1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
1/2 tsp Fennel seeds
1/2 tsp Coriander seeds
6 Clove
3 Green cardamom
1/2 stick Cinnamon
12 Peppercorn
2-3 Red chili
1 Bay leaf

Other ingredients


2 medium beet
2 carrot
2medium potato

2 tbsp of grated ginger
2 green chili chopped 

1 and 1/2 tsp of Bhaja masla,
1/4-1/2 tsp of red Chili Powder,
salt to taste
sugar if needed

Mix of sooji/rava and rice flour or bread crumbs



Lightly toast the spice mix on griddle and grind to powder.

Boil the veggies in pressure cooker or in microwave and mash together.

Heat oil in a plan and add crushed ginger, chilies, the mashed veggies, salt and sugar.

Saute the mix until water evaporates and the mixture comes together. You can also add a little rice flour to thicken the mix if needed.

When the mixture cools down, make croquettes. Roll them in bread crumbs or a mix of sooji and rice flour.

Cook them either by deep frying or shallow frying in a griddle. Serve with ketchup.

Some tips – The spice mix is very potent, use it carefully or your chops will taste very spicy. You can freeze the spice mix and the chop mix and use it for a later date.
